Can you get horse riding lessons if you’re an adult?

September 18, 2009

I am 26 and really want to learn to ride horses but I’ve never had lessons and I don’t know if there are places that do lessons for adults. Can you hire all the stuff you need or would I need to buy a lot of equipment?

Of course you can learn as an adult, we have people that have retired coming for lessons just because they now have the time to do something they always wanted ( Personally I think adults make better students as they are less likely to jump around, get hurt or spook the horses than a 5year old). All you really need to start is a pair of boots that arent too wide and give good ankle support, most well established and BHS approved riding centres have a supply of hats for you to borrow in an assortment of sizes, and someone should be on hand to help fit it. And eventually if you get bitten by the bug and want to ride more often you can start to pick up you’re own equipment.
ttfn ;o)
ps. I was a nightmare 5yr old rider once, you are better of starting now.

If you’re willing to pay for lessons I am sure that they will give them to you. There is no reason why they shouldn’t. You could also take piano lessons if you wanted to. Age is irrelevant only enthusiasm.

Of course you can if you can afford them. You may have to buy your own hard hat, otherwise they should have tack and to spare; it is after all a stables! Explain that you’re just trying it to see how it goes and they’ll understand.

Most classes are a mixture of adults and children – usually more adults. The least you will need is a proper hat…beyond that saddles, etc are provided by the place you learn to ride.

any riding school should do lessons for adults. some might even run seperate ones for adults only. you only really need to buy a riding hat, sensible boots, & jodphurs & maybe a back protector. though i daresay some places might even hire them out.

the hat is the most important thing as it must fit your head properly so even if you can hire all the other items its best to always have your own personal hat. it could save your life

You can get lessons for anything if you are an adult and can pay the relevant fee. I always wanted to learn to ride and never had the opportunity so I think you should hire what you need to make sure you will like it and want to continue once you have had a few lessons. Have fun.

u can learn whenever u want, the conductor just wants his/her fee at the end of the week, and u can either buy or rent the equiptment, but if u are planning to go long on this i’d buy the stuff. the conductor should supply u all the equiptment though, since he/she is teaching you

Yes. Absolutely. I took some lessons as an adult. You have to go t o a riding academy or whereever, in your area. You can google the info to find our. don’t buy equipment until you know if you like it. I just borrowed the helmet. It’s very expensive here in NY so I didn’t care to continue.

Sure you can! Plenty of adults take riding lessons. Just check your phone book and make some calls. The stable you choose will let you use their equipment for lessons–they provide the horse too! They can probably even give you instruction in horse care; currying their coats, cleaning their hooves, etc.

If you want to try it out before you sign up for lessons, see if there are any guided horseback riding outings in your area. A guide will lead a group of your friends through hiking trails or along a beach. They should provide all equipment for this too, and the horses will be docile and easy to ride. Have a great time!!

Any place that gives lessons to children will also give them to adults.

You can definately get lessons as an adult. The school will usually provide hats. You just need some flat sturdy boots, or to buy some proper riding boots, and to have fun. Phone around your local riding stables and asking if they take adults is your best option.

Used to use riding schools as a child. I would rind in a group with at least 3 adults.

Of course you can. Check out your local riding schools. And book a lesson. You won’t need to buy expensive equipment to start with. Just some good flat boots and comfy trousers. Most local schools will lend you a riding hat to start with.

Good luck.

anybody can have lessons but if you don’t want to mix with children why don’t you ask for private lessons or an adults only class….
